Where Did We Go?

Nigeria is no longer the most corrupt nation in the world; Haiti is, according to Transparency International. Actually, Nigeria isn't even in the top 10. On one hand, this is interesting news for obvious reasons - it means there are countries that are even more corrupt than ours. On the other hand, if there are countries more corrupt than ours - a whole 10, we know for certain - then what on earth does that say about this world of ours? Scary thought. And what does it say about the people who are doing the measuring? Did these countries just suddenly become more corrupt in the past couple of years? Or did people just decide to take more notice after they became bored with the usual scapegoats?

I'm interested to see what will become of the Haitians in world media following this release. And as an aside: the French and the Italians have been linked to global mass corruption, being cited as the two countries that pay the most bribes in developing nations. Funny how they aren't considered one of the top 10.

I wonder when did this corruption start. Perhaps when the French demanded compensation after Haiti liberated itself for its 'property' (enslaved Africans). Or maybe, in the beginning part of the 20th century, when the 'white man's burden' commandered the united states to invade and subsequently occupy the island, raping it sufficiently through brutal military force till it lay prostrate for its business tycoons to set up shop...gotta love dollar diplomacy. or perhaps it was when the revengeful french (who never forgave haiti for taking away its most lucrative 'sugar pot'-literally) joined forces with equally vengeful canada and the u.s. to remove a democratically elected president who had this cock-a-doodle idea that the wealth should be distributed throughout the country and human trafficking of girls and drudge labor was a moral and ethical wrong. i mean, they only re-established the ripe system of oligarchy that had dominated the country, and haitians ARE still eking out an existence, no matter how meager. i'm sorry, did someone say....corruption. maybe its one of those things that is simply in the eye of the beholder.

LOL@Kulu ...

The details u r actually looking at is for big frauds o.When it comes to small fraud issues ..Naija is the the Oga ..

I went to a seminar for Western Union which was organised by FBI and men I almost run comot for the seminar, cos after Columbia,Naija is the second country that is redflaged by FBI o ... one of the problems they r having with Naija is that we dont have a good record system in Naija.U can imagine u sending money thru western union to someone in Lagos and someone in Port Harcourt collected the money from a Bank within the next 6hrs while u r still waiting to give the real person the control number ....

We too much o ..

julia says to anonymous #1: will you be my friend? please?
julia says to anonymous #2: The truth is we don pass the powa of transparency international...their measuring devices just break when they try to test the corruption. If there's a -1 most corrupt country, let me tell you what name is there.
julia says to naijabloke: wondas shall neva cease! for reals man, naija is probably harbouring the most concentrated amount of scientific genious the world has to offer. If the west were smart, they would invest. If we our gov't were smart they would invest...but alas...
julia says to kulu: You're probably hissing at some of my comments but you know me...everything is in good fun. Now smile for me...yeah thats it. Didn't hurt too much did it? Just kidding. I love your blog, kills my itch for the good ol' days :)

just let my words of wisdom massage your mind, let it waft through your brain trailing a light rustic scent that tickles your ego and strokes the lower part of your consciousness. Let it rake its fingers ever so slightly through your curiosity, tease you into submission, instigate breathy purrs of approval that appear in deep naija/new haven inflected prose that unfailingly seduces my curiosity, compelling me to nibble at the edges of your titillating blog every night for dessert.

does that not sound better than me telling you who I am…
