Dane Buying Ugandans for Art

I know that all I seem to be talking about these days is Africans, but the world seems to be running mad and I can't help it! Plus, these days, I'm increasingly inundated with news about that continent - I think this is God's way of telling me that I must not stay in this country when I'm finished with school. But that's a topic for another blog. This blog is talking about a strange breed of neocolonialism that's boldly underlined with an unfettered desire for one Danish man's massive ego to be stroked. And the sad thing is that hunger and poverty have clearly numbed the senses and pride of these Ugandans, who don't seem to see anything wrong with what they are doing (or so the Dane would have us believe).

I take God beg you, read that press release (in the hyperlink) and then go on to check out the pictures on his website: www.hornsleth.com. What is this world coming to, holy Father??

Remember Saro-Wiwa today, everybody

Kulu I feel u jere on the story, but my dear poverty can drive u to do anything and the people might even rise against the government if they try to prevent it cos they need the kind of payment the guy is offering.

U can imagine what would happen if he goes to a village in Naija too.

Kulu the hyperlink for "Remember Saro-Wiwa" is not working ..U need to re map it

U have a nice weekend

I don't understand...what is the difference between this & slave trade?

I try so hard to convince myself that this world is getting better...but its evident we are just going in circles.

@ naijabloke: cheers, mate. link should be working now...that was weird, cuz it was working before.

@ anonymous: a friend of mine argues, justifiably, that he would have been able to do the same anywhere in the world. for example, if he had just upped the stakes and turned pigs into homes, he would have the same effect in America. to which my response was, is it better if people sell their pride because of greed or because of hunger? he didn't say anything to that. the world is about circles, from its very shape to the shape of human behavior. makes one wonder if things can actually ever get better.

kulutempa: its exciting to see the way you're processing the world. i truly believe that our roads are designed for us before we enter this earth although "choice" provides us the veneer of agency. after reading this post, i got an admonition i couldn't explain...it just was. you are so going to leave your stamp on this world, whether it be naija, the whole of africa, or humankind in general. the storm is gathering for our generation and the main actors are beginning to assert themselves quietly. how this drama unfolds no one knows. we do know that there are major tectonic shifts taking place across the globe-the crumbling of empires and the emergence of new. its a pregnant time for africa, or as my mentor, john henrik clarke used to say, its the best and worst time for the continent and its scattered children. the best, becaue we have an opportunity to unify and humanize the world in the spirit of muntu. the worst, because we don't seem to know it. full speed ahead: saro-wiwa. you ain't even started yet!
